Looking for entertainment that doesn’t cost a dime? ArtsFest, presented by United Arts of Central Florida, celebrates local arts and culture by hosting various events in the Central Florida area during the month of February.
Feed your family’s artistic spirit or discover a new curiosity by attending one of the 302 free cultural events including theater, dance, comedy, art and exhibition galleries, workshops, storytelling and much more. Some family-friendly events located close to Kissimmee or worth the drive downtown include:
- Osceola Arts Festival (Kissimmee): February 11 and 12, head to Valencia College and see over 150 artists from around the U.S.
- The Storyteller (International Drive – Orlando): February 18 and 25, celebrate diversity and learn about struggles and successes of African-Americans.
- SomeBunny Special Puppet Show (Downtown Orlando): February 21, join Miss Bunny on her forest adventure full of surprises, where kids learn that they are “SomeBunny Special” too.
- Tree of Light (Downtown Orlando): All month, 24 hours a day, interact with the Tree of Light, a tall sculpture made from recycled materials, and discover what happens once all the lights are on.

Now in its seventh year, Otronicon, or the Orlando Electronic Interactive Entertainment Convention, at the Orlando Science Center, January 13-16, celebrates how video games, simulation and digital media impact the way we live by exploring the science, art and technology behind them. “Boot-up” for four days of video game-filled fun and play video games, from classic arcade games to the latest platforms, as well as experience virtual reality and real-world training simulators.
Providing more than just family entertainment, at Otronicon you can learn how video games and interactive technology contribute to advancements in health care, education, training and simulation. Meet creative professionals behind video game technology including EA SPORTS, Lockheed Martin, University of Central Florida, Florida Hospital and for the first time, Walt Disney World® Resort. Disney will be demonstrating how they use modeling and simulation to create some of the world’s most memorable attractions.
Jam in “Rock Band” onstage with the controls embedded in an actual drum kit, attend a workshop and learn how to create video games, control robots, challenge players to a round of laser tag, see a laser light show, explore the Orlando Science Center and much, much more! Otronicon, this year, is expected to be the biggest event yet. Take the whole family and have fun while learning on your Orlando vacation!

Need to fill some vacation “space”? After the parks, head on over to the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral to catch the Shuttle Endeavour launch. Scheduled for this Tuesday, March 11th at 2:28 AM ET, the early morning lift-off is sure to provide a spectacular once-in-a-lifetime view. The 16-day mission for the crew of seven astronauts is to transport a robot and the first section of a Japanese research lab to the International Space Station.
Can’t stay up that late? There’s still Mission: Space at Disney’s EPCOT. You can also try your hand at landing the space shuttle on one of WonderWorks’ landing simulators.
Be sure to check the Kennedy Space Center website for updates on Tuesday’s scheduled launch.
